Heat refers to a mech's capacity to continously fire weapons. Heat rises with prolonged weapon use. If a mech's heat rises past its limit, a mech overheats, disabling its weapons until all heat is depleted. Heat decreases when weapons are not in use. Firing primary weapons are the main cause of overheating, as the cooldown or delay of secondary weapons is usually long enough to negate more heat than what is output.
